This issue had a completely different flavor than I am used to on this title. I haven’t been the biggest fan of writer Ram V. and was expecting the worst, assuming that it would be a one off inventory story. Then I sat down to read it, and I have to be honest.
I absolutely loved it.
The first images of the book are of Selina falling into a body of water. She starts sinking and sinking. She’s also bleeding. How did she get here?
It’s an intriguing setup to the story that made me sit up at attention.
From there, the story continues along at a fairly great clip.
We get to see the story flashback in time from there to Selina having a martini. Someone has called her to meet up. She finds herself talking to a woman named Karen Rain. She wants to hire Selina to obtain a secret file that is very valuable.
It’s a simple premise to be fair. But the creative team execute the story in a classy way. It’s well planned and just pleasant to read.
Selina makes her move. She goes after the file. It all leads back to the beginning of the story of course. If this sounds pretty standard, well, it’s not. There’s plenty of things to like in this book. One of the big things is the artwork.
I’ve seen Mirka Andolfo’s work many times before this. Yet here, it shines more brightly than usual. Or, in other words, it’s never been this good. The storytelling is fantastic and the layouts are just exciting. This is some great and actually inspiring artwork. I hope Andolfo comes into Selina’s life more often as an artist.
This issue does have a cool villain in it as well. Honestly, it was a far better issue than I ever expected. That’s a good thing. Sure it won’t change the world. But it was just enjoyable. And sometimes that’s really all you need.
