‘Action Comics #1029’ (review)

Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson,
Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad

Art by Phil Hester, Mike Avon Oeming
Published by DC Comics

I am loving this new direction the Superman titles have taken.

Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson has done one hell of a job reinvigorating this line of books. The stories have been extremely strong and smart and the concepts that he is coming up with have been great.

Superman is caught up with the leviathans of the Breach as this issue begins. He is sort of trapped fighting them and things aren’t looking too good for him.

While he is there, he learns the origin of the Breach and it is horrifying to say the least.

Things start to get pretty out of hand for Clark.

In fact, they may even look hopeless. That is when we get to see Jon Kent aka Superboy go to help his father!

And Jon is determined to alter the course of history to do so!

Superman is certainly outmatched by the Breach.

When Jon comes, we get a bit of a surprise with the story. I don’t want to spoil it, but it foreshadows the upcoming big storyline coming in the Superman line of books. It is looking quite thrilling too. The story works great and the art by Hester is pretty decent as well.

There is also a backup story written by Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad with art by Mike Avon Oeming. It is a story about the Midnighter and it is a continuing story that I liked enough, though the lead story is better. All in all though, this is a pretty damn good issue.

RATING: A
