‘Dark Nights: Death Metal Robin King #1’ (review)

Written By Peter J. Tomasi and Tony Patrick
Art by Riley Rossmo and Daniel Sampere
Published by DC Comics

DC seems really hot and bothered to make this Robin King character popular.

Maybe fans love him. I personally don’t get the appeal but whatever.

This one-shot has Peter J. Tomasi as one of the writers and I will read anything he writes. He wrote the main story and that intrigued me. So, it was with trepidation that I began reading this comic book.

It has an awesome beginning drawn by Riley Rossmo (he draws the main storyline). It sets up the character and shows the reader who he is instantly. We then cut to the where things are presently in the Death Metal storyline.

It is a bit jarring but I was into it. Things only get better from this point on as well.

We get to see Robin King wreck some havoc through the Multiverse.

We get to see him attack Firestorm! We also get to see him fight with Enemy Ace and others! He even has a meeting with that dastardly villain, the Batman Who Laughs. It is really energetic and really inventive.

Some of the heroes form a plan to strike back.  Things lead to a hell of a conclusion that leads directly back into the Death Metal storyline. There is also a decent backup story by writer Tony Patrick and artist Daniel Sampere that has the Signal stumbling upon a Robin King related case.

This is an excellent one shot that spins off an excellent main series. The stories are great and the artwork is great, especially by Rossmo. I could read a hundred of these spin offs, as long as they are as well handled as this one. Well done.

RATING: A
