Tracking the intertwining stories of three young couples, Lovecut keenly observes the contemporary challenges of identity and sexuality posed by the digital age. As the virtual nature of Alex and Momo’s relationship allows them to conceal uncomfortable truths, Ben and Luka’s promising match on a dating app collides with the barriers they face in real life. Meanwhile, Anna and Jakob realize the radical visibility of uploading their sex life to the web.
With a careful aesthetic that avoids anything too scandalous, and a cast as young as they are talented, writer-directors Liana Estañol and Johanna Lietha pull the curtain back on teenage relationships and friendships in this hedonistic and technology-driven 21st century. Joachim Kurz of Kino Zeit writes, “The cast of young people consists entirely of actors who have no significant acting experience…They bring a freshness, immediacy – and yes, authenticity to this film, which is contagious…, is convincing all around and brings highly sensitive topics onto the screen with a lot of energy.”
