Written by Bryan Hill
Illustrated by N. Steven Harris
Published by DC Comics
This has been one hell of a series. Bryan Hill has taken this character which many have written off and made a great story. This issue is the end of the storyline Hill has set up from the beginning. What an ending though. Hill doesn’t hold back and writes a chilling ending that is totally rewarding.
The opening sequence of this issue has Michael Cray meeting up with John Constantine. Cray then promptly beats the hell out of Constantine looking for answers. Constantine does give him some answers, but they are not what Cray was expecting. Hill flips the script here, and it’s horrifying and heartbreaking.
From there, Cray goes to a bar knowing what it is he has to do.
He has to go kill the alternative version of Wonder Woman. He gets himself ready. Then he goes and launches an all out against Diana. And its brutal to watch the results.
Their confrontation is what the entire series has been leading to. Bryan Hill writes one hell of a finale. And the art by N. Steven Harris is so visceral that you can’t take your eyes off of it. It’s brutal, bloody and shocking. The pair worked so well together and they really have a great last few moments creating this comic.
The last few story beats are horrifying. Hill makes it clear that this is not a happy ending. It is an ending that is haunting and memorable. As far as I’m concerned, this is the definitive book about Cray and the one that others should look at. He’s a viable character and this team made him something worth talking about.
