Fox seems determined to fully exploit their rights to Marvel’s X-Men property, announcing today after months of rumor, that an X-Men television series is in development.
According to Fox entertainment chairmen Gary Newman, the final approval is in Marvel’s hands, “It’s in negotiations. We’re cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them. That will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative.”
The Hollywood Reporter announced that 24 producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto are involved. Patrick McKay and JD Payne will write the script and will share a created by credit on the project with Katz and Coto. Katz and Coto will serve as showrunners.
It’s been speculated that the series will be based on the comic X-Factor.
It will be interesting if Marvel utilizes a bargaining chip with Fox, permitting television rights in exchange for reabsorbing their Fantastic Four property into the Marvel Studios fold.
As for X-Factor, I’m actually a little surprised with Fox’s choice. The comic series has had several incarnations including as a government agency, a corporate backed team and as a detective agency.
I think Fox will work to try and make the series as accessible as possible which has me thinking the series would benefit most by adapting The New Mutants series, which was Marvel’s first mutant comic spinoff which focused on students of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters learning to use their powers.
