Warren Ellis has brought us a reboot of the Wildstorm Universe that was exciting and a bit mad.
Over the past 24 issues, we have witnessed some incredible comic book moments. He has also laid down the groundwork for others to take the ball and run with it.
This is the final issue of his groundbreaking book with Jon Davis-Hunt. And it’s utterly spectacular.
The book starts off with the world seemingly coming to an end. IO has betrayed everyone!
The whole place is now falling apart and they have to pay the price of their actions. It’s pretty apparent from the first page it’s going to end brutally for them. And then the hits just keep on coming throughout the issue.
Skywatch seems intent on destroying everything. They just want to see the entire planet go up on flames. Bendix has lost his mind. The only one trying to prevent a complete disaster is Jenny Mei Sparks and all of the orphans that she has gathered into a makeshift army.
A huge battle ensues. I don’t want to spoil anything, but suffice to say that there are twists and turns that I never saw coming. There are major character deaths. And there’s a physical and mental battle going on here of epic proportions.
The whole thing is beyond awesome.
Warren Ellis doesn’t play it safe at all. He takes a chance with the status quo and just does his own thing. It paid off in spades. By the end of the book, I felt riveted. That last panel really sums up at how I felt after reading the full story.
That last image, as well as the entire series, is beautifully rendered by Jon Davis-Hunt. He has done a tremendous job Illustrating the scripts by Ellis. These two creators worked wonderfully together and the series ends on a high note. They have more than accomplished what they set out to do and this book works on a deeper level too. It’s a satisfying conclusion indeed.
