The New GHOSTBUSTERS Trailer Has Arrived

Written by Erin Maxwell

Who you gonna call?

“30 years ago, four scientists saved New York. This summer, a new team will answer the call.”

The girl-powered driver reboot of Ghostbusters released its teaser trailer on Thursday morning, setting itself up to as Sony’s major tentpole for the upcoming summer season.

The much-eagerly awaited sneak peek at the reboot features Melissa McCarthy and Saturday Night Live alumn Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones in the lead roles with Chris Hemsworth working the desk back at the fire station.

Also on board is much of the original cast, including Big Bad Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts and Ernie Hudson, but their participation in the project and the size of their roles remains to be seen.

In a October 2015 Entertainment Weekly article, Aykroyd stated that they would not be playing their original roles, but different characters, which is onboard with the reboot of the series rather than a third installment.

Director Paul Feig has stated that he wanted to make a movie where people were not used to seeing ghosts. In order to do that, a reboot was in order.

For fans, the trailer hits all the points: Ecto-1, check. Slimer, check. Ray Parker Jr. theme song, check.

Humor…that remains to be seen. I don’t know about you, but I’m praying that this isn’t one of those times that all the funny moments aren’t used up in the trailer.

Here is what we know thus far.

  • Wiig plays particle physicist Erin Gilbert, McCarthy plays paranormal researcher Abby Yates, McKinnon plays engineer Jillian Holtzman and Jones plays former MTA worker Patty Tolan, who gets to tag along because “she knows the city.”
  • This is not sequel. This is a reboot. Thus, there have never been Ghostbusters before. There is no handbook here.
  • Unlike the first two films, the ghosts can take on human form, thus creating evil Ghostbuster doppelgangers.
  • As of late, Sony cannot be trusted with large tentpoles.

Good luck, ladies. I am rooting for you.
