‘The Marvels #2’ (review)

The Marvels wove a pretty big footprint for its web in the first issue, taking us across decades and multiple locations.

But this time, we’re mainly in New York following Kevin Schumer, the super-tech enthusiast who leads superhero sightseeing tours. We find out how he gets his hands on all this tech, as he straps on a cloaking device, Zodiac Star-Blazer pistol and hops on a rickety Goblin Glider to visit his uncle, Phineas T. Mason aka the Tinkerer, fix-it man to supervillains all over the five boroughs.

Uncle T sends Kevin to check out the ruins of the factory that Punisher blew up in the previous issue. Meanwhile, a couple of cosmic dudes named Ace and Threadneedle are watching Kevin and speaking in metaphysical riddles about guiding events and choosing Kevin for some unnamed heroic task.

Before we learn what’s going on about saving the world, we’re whisked away to modern Sin-Cong where an ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is on assignment before – oops – black energy starts shooting out of the ground and forming the black dome we saw Captain America leap into in the story’s future, last issue.

Yildiray Cinar’s art continues to amaze. I mentioned Rags Morales before, but there’s also some of that classical comic book draftsmanship of a Jackson Guice in there, too.

The panel movement, changing angles and expressive faces make you want to linger. It all feels lived-in.

Did I mention the Punisher and Black Cat are also in this, and may show up later?

Yeah, we’re only starting to fill in the web
