‘The Hero Trade #1’ (review)

Written by Matt Kindt
Art by David Lapham
Published by Bad Idea

This book was a surprise release this week. I don’t think that anyone knew this was coming out. But what a welcome and nice surprise this is.

It is also a highly original book. The idea of having writer Matt Kindt (who I love) writing a book for artist David Lapham (who I love) just floored me upon hearing it.

This book does not disappoint in the least.

The only problem that I had with it was that it was rather short. The whole story is not even ten pages. Basically, it opens with a bunch of lowlifes in a bar. One of them is discussing some new product that they have in their car that will give the rest of them a real high.

That is when they all head outside.

The dealer opens up his trunk, and he has a seemingly dead superhero in there. Everyone gets excited. That is when a bit of violence breaks out.

Despite that, we do see that this hero is going to be consumed in some manner to get people high.

We do get to see that device that converts the hero’s wares into a drug. We get to see people smoke the contents.

The question is then raised that if the hero is supposed to be immortal, then how can he be “dead?” The creative team somewhat answers that question by the end.

The story by Kindt is great. The art by Lapham is superb.

Again, I wish there was more to it. The whole thing felt like a light appetizer rather than a full meal. It also feels like they didn’t even scratch the surface of this concept, which is pretty excellent in of itself.

RATING: B
