‘Superman’s Pal: Jimmy Olsen #3’ (review)

Written by Matt Fraction
Art by Steve Lieber
Published by DC Comics

This comic book has been a lot better and more enjoyable than I originally thought it might be.

Matt Fraction cuts a bit loose here and it’s a welcome treat. It might actually be one of the better Superman related titles that is out right now and that’s saying something.

The issue starts off with another tale of Luthais Alexander, who is Lex Luthor’s ancestor. He is being hanged by one of Jimmy Olsen’s relatives and we get to see an animosity forming between the two families. Luthais gets free but not before swearing vengeance on Olsen! It’s a nice start to the book.

From there, we get to see Lex Luthor himself talking with Miss Tessmacher.

He is trying to solve a mystery himself and he is getting frustrated. It’s a cool little scene that gives the rest of the story some context. I enjoyed it.

We then get to see a lot of the side characters having little stories of their own. It’s nice and well planned. There also seems to be a relationship to some of the other events going on in Jimmy Olson’s life, directly or indirectly as well. It’s a lot of fun to be honest.

At that point, we get to see that Jimmy has indeed survived the assassination attempt on his life. You see, Jimmy has an “Assassination Dummy” for such occasions. Things get very funny as he has to find a way to rid of the dummy body and eventually bury it.

This book is a lot of fun. Fraction does a great job of keeping it light as well as keeping the story itself moving. The art is well handled too and it is simple yet effective. This is a decent issue in a swell series.
