‘Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen  #11’ (review)

Written by Matt Fraction
Art by Steve Lieber
Published by DC Comics

This is the penultimate issue of this title!

I have to say, I have really enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. The creative team really outdid themselves on this one. I have been loving the direction that they have taken us. It has been pretty unique, to say the least.

The opening sequence of the book has Jimmy Olsen on a spaceship with some of his old alien friends. Jimmy had come to ask them a favor. He appeals to Lord Hun’ya to help him.  Jimmy makes one heck of a speech trying to win their favor.

It is a truly silly scene. And it’s one you cannot take your eyes off of.

Lord Hun’ya and his gang agree to help Jimmy out!

It is an exciting opening scene. Jimmy and the aliens head to Earth! They better hurry though, because it is certainly not looking too good. Can Jimmy and the aliens get there in time? Or, in fact, is it hopeless?

Things get completely bonkers. Inexplicably, stories and themes from the previous ten issues start to really come together. Writer Matt Fraction seems to have had a bigger plan in mind than just unbridled silliness. I mean, we get that too but it is more tempered here than in previous issues of this book.

The package is completed by artist Steve Lieber’s wonderful work here. He is truly one of the most amazing artists that we have in this field. The art is expressive and the storytelling is great. This is another fine issue and I am sad that there is only one more left!
