‘Superman #3’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Illustrated by Ivan Reis
Published by DC Comics

This issue is just plain nuts! And I love that! Bendis has taken this story that is set in the Phantom Zone and runs away with it! It’s so damn entertaining that I smiled throughout  the entire issue. This is some great stuff and some of the best Superman comics in years. It’s really that good.

The issue starts out with Livewire firing up an electrical storm. Through this, Superman discovers how the entire planet got sucked into he Phantom Zone!

More importantly, they have to figure out how the hell to get back! Bendis raises the stakes right at the beginning.

Then, we see Rogol Zaar meet a new playmate in the Phantom Zone. He meets Jax-ur, who was sent there because he blew up a moon on Krypton.

These two quasi-terrorists form a bond. Then, they launch a crazy attack on the Earth itself with all of the local denizens.

The atmosphere starts making everyone sick. We see Batman hunched over a toilet. We see that The Flash is sick in a similar fashion. On top of that, Rogol Zaar and Jax-ur are prepping for war.

They are heading toward earth in a scary looking aircraft. Can they be stopped?

At the end of the issue, Superman is tired of being on the defensive. He flies up towards the aircraft and is ready to attack. That’s the setup to the next issue and it looks like it going to be a madhouse. This is some great stuff.

The writing is fast and funny. Bendis is killing it here again and is firing on all cylinders. The art by Reis is tops. This is a great comic that has another fantastic chapter here. Keep it up, guys.
