After the last couple of issues, I have been thinking that maybe Bendis just needs to stop writing Superman.
I know that they think that the new direction is edgy but honestly it is just stale. I opened this issue with some hope that maybe this will be the issue that they turn it all around.
No such luck. The storytelling is all over the place and Bendis doesn’t give anything a chance to actually breathe.
The opening page asks “Who is Clark Kent?”
People discuss in the book if it is fair for Clark to be a reporter because he can work so fast.
This is a pretty intriguing topic. And then, just like that, we see Superman fighting Mongul. It took me a minute to adjust.
We then get a fight between Superman and Mongul. It is nicely drawn but there isn’t much beyond that. And then, just like that, we are back at The Daily Planet. The people there argue about Superman. It gets pretty painful. And then, just like that, Lana Lang shows up.
We then see Superman fight Mongul again.
They tussle a bit. Then, more aliens happen to show up. We then cut back to earth. We get to see Lois Lane flanked by reporters. And that is how the issue ends. Oy vey.
Not a lot happens in this issue. It feels padded. The artwork by Ivan Reis is the only good thing happening here. I feel like all I do at this point is pray that the inevitable reboot for Superman happens sooner rather than later.
