We finally get a new story in this title after the very long and overstuffed Unity Saga.
It is a complete breath of fresh air right from the start. Bendis makes it clear that the long storyline is over and that we are moving on to something new!
I did enjoy this more than the previous issues, and I hope to god that Bendis writes more issues like this.
The opening sequence has Jonathan in a spaceship leaving Damian a message. This happened while he was with his grandfather in outer space. It is a bit charming and Jon ends his message with “do not sell the card collection.”
It is funny, a bit sweet, and it is certainly refreshing.
We then cut over to Damian Wayne fighting a bunch of Leviathan’s goons. It is a cool little scene especially as drawn by Lafuente. The scene flows extremely well and is actually kind of fun. The goons escape.
That is when Jon appears before Damian, all grown up. This is when the book gets really great.
Damian and Jon catch up. In a funny moment, Jon hugs Damian. Damian is convinced that Jon is Leviathan. They have a conversation. They catch up. They go and get hot dogs together.
They do some crime fighting. The whole time Jon is trying to decide whether to go to the future to join the Legion or not.
The issue ends with Jon’s decision. It’s sweet and heartbreaking and wonderful. This is the best work Bendis has done for DC. I do hope he writes more issues like this. It is pretty perfect.
It is quiet and genuine and we need more comics like this.
