‘Super Sons/Dynomutt Special #1’ (review)

Written by Peter J. Tomasi
Illustrated by Oclair Albert, Fernando Pasarin
Published by DC Comics

Fans of the Super Sons were recently dishearted to learn their ongoing series was canceled, but as it turns out, more adventures are in store for the World’s Finest Offspring this August in the form of a 12-issue maxiseries (written by original series writer Peter J. Tomasi).

As an added bonus, Tomasi wrote this crossover one-shot, a delightful tale that should tide Super Sons fans over until August, but appeal to all fans as well. It’s a self-contained story of friendship that might also leave fans clamoring for more Dynomutt adventures.

Tomasi and penciller Fernando Pasarin have the Super Sons visiting Big City: Jon is there with his family for a funeral, while Damian is in town to visit old friends of his father’s–Blue Falcon and Dynomutt. (Tomasi ties the characters together with a particularly clever, yet elegantly simple reveal.)

All isn’t well though: Blue Falcon is under a villain’s control and has heavily damaged Dynomutt. Superboy and Robin have to stop Blue Falcon, protect Dynomutt, get to the bottom of this mess, and repair Big City’s greatest friendship.

The highlight of the story, however, is the opening, in which Tomasi establishes Blue Falcon’s origin and how he was driven to create Dynomutt. It’s a surprisingly moving and gorgeously drawn sequence that tugged at my heart-strings almost as much as the fabled first eight minutes of Up, if not as much.

In fact, the whole book is wonderfully rendered by Pasarin and inker Oclair Albert (with colors by Gabe Eltaeb). The book is realistically rendered yet dripping with not only sympathy but dynamism. The art complements Tomasi’s story perfectly, bringing to wonderful life this heartwarming tale of man’s best (super)friend.
