This book really has an amazing third issue and it picks up right where that left off.
The United States of America is at war with Scarlet and her crew! And things are going to get worse before they get better!
And with Bendis and Maleev at the wheel I can’t wait to see what happens!
The first few pages are Scarlet talking with a Special Forces guy she has captured. The conversation goes a strange way as she tells him that she is thinking of surrendering. Bendis keeps the dialogue honest and real so it feels natural. He’s probably the best writer of dialogue in comics at the moment.
From there, we get to see Scarlet considering her surrender. She talks to her cohorts and tries to figure if they think she should surrender or not. The rest of the issue is her weighing that decision. There is a lot of soul searching. There is a lot of intriguing conversations and a lot of viewpoints expressed. It’s all very well thought out.
And then comes the moment of the big surrender.
This scene is perfectly rendered by Maleev. He makes it understated and subtle without going the melodramatic route. And then, she finally does the deed. And the surrender doesn’t go as expected. And now I’m starting to wonder: Just what is Scarlet’s plans and how is she going to screw over the United States government?
The issue is a slow burn because it’s going to erupt in the next issue. The ending here is so damn interesting that I can’t wait to see where it goes. This is another fine issue in a great comic book series.
