‘Nightwing Vol. 1: Leaping into the Light’ (review)

Written by Tom Taylor
Art by Bruce Redondo
Published by DC Comics

Every so often, a creative team comes on board a title and truly knocks it out of the park.

Writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruce Redondo have done that here with this edition. Their book is a passionate exploration of the character that is also very defining. Dick Grayson’s character development has never been in better hands.

The issues highlight what happens when Nightwing heads back to Bludhaven. The town is still run by the villainous Blockbuster. Dick immediately takes note of this and tries to find a way to come to terms  with it all as well. He does have a few more advantages than normal at his disposal.

Dick has been left a considerable inheritance by Alfred. This allows Dick to come into his own, independently.

Taylor uses this plot device to show the character spreading his wings, so to speak.

Dick’s journey is handled with intelligence and wit.

There is a new character lurking around Bludhaven, Melinda Zucco, who has ties to Dick’s past. I wasn’t sure how this would pan out, especially after the reveal. I came to really enjoy the twist the team gave to readers, and it was well handled for sure.

There are some great stories here. At times, it does border on being a bit heavy-handed with some of the stories (politics, homelessness) but Taylor is a sharp writer and makes the stories worthwhile. His scripting shines.

The artwork by Bruce Redondo is the best work of his career, thus far. The spreads are great, the action is superb, and the character moments work incredibly well. This book is awesome from start to finish. This creative team deserves kudos for taking this character and forging an exciting and smart book each month, without fail.

Highly recommended!
