So I went into this a little bit worried. I haven’t been too big of a fan of the DC work of Brian Michael Bendis. A lot of his output has been rather rushed and underwhelming. So I went into this book with a lot of trepidation.
There’s also the matter of the Legion themselves as they have been away from comics for quite a bit.
How would this new book fare?
Well, it does indeed have a strange beginning. We see Rose talking about her past life. We get to see her fighting Superman.
Things go back and forth a bit. We then figure out that she is both Rose and Thorn now. Things really pick up from there.
We see that Rose and Thorn have been talking to Supergirl.
Supergirl is trying to determine what level of threat this Rose and Thorn is. Supergirl even refers to here as “Harley Quinn before there was a Harley Quinn.”
Rose reveals that Thorn was killed. She then tells Supergirl that the essence of Thorn that is inside of her cannot become loose! Supergirl promises her that everything will be okay. And that is usually the time where something bad happens.
We the cut to the Batman Beyond era of time and into Neo-Gotham. Batman encounters Thorn. They defeat some evil doers. Then, they have a scene together where she asks if he’s the real Batman. Terry and Thorn have a conversation and then she takes off!
And so it goes. The story goes on through different eras. It honestly feels a little disjointed. We get to see the Kamandi era and it doesn’t make much sense honestly why we needed to see this scene. Luckily it’s quick and then we get back on track to the main story.
I get what Bendis is trying to do and that’s having everything lead up to us meeting the Legion. And it’s not terrible, just very obvious. And honestly, I like the simplicity but maybe it’s a little TOO simple. The artwork by all is very decent but it feels very familiar. Let see where it goes from here but this series start off with some amazing art and a very obvious story.
RATING: B-
