‘John Constantine: Hellblazer #5’ (review)

Written by Simon Spurrier
Art by Matias Bergara
Published by DC Comics

I am loving this new John Constantine series.

Writer Simon Spurrier is bringing a great flavor to the title and his take on Constantine is pretty fantastic. This is exactly how I like this character: Gritty, dark, and fun.

The opening scene shows Constantine waking up with a hangover.

He is with a sprightly fellow. He may or may not have had sex with this man. I found this opening very amusing and it definitely made for an interesting beginning.

From there, it got a bit more fun as well.

It seems Constantine has been named the One True Magelord of England.

The issue explores that theme. We get to see Constantine get into various bits of trouble. Some are funny. Some are terrifying. Most of it is pretty interesting.

By the end of the issue, a villain of sorts emerges.

We get to see Constantine put into a dilemma. And there is a hell of a last page that has to be seen to be believed. The dialogue and the story are pretty cool in this issue.

The artwork, however, left a little to be. desired. It is not that the artwork is bad. It’s actually pretty good. It just doesn’t fit this character at all. Maybe the art will be more suited for another book.

For me, it didn’t seem to work here.
