‘John Constantine: Hellblazer #4’ (review)

I am really so happy we have the real John Constantine back in comics.

For the last ten or so years, we have gotten the watered down version. This Constantine has his balls back and I am loving this spin on the character.

There is some really great stuff happening here.

The beginning of this issue has John Constantine putting on gloves, almost like he is “scrubbing up” to go to work. He looks at himself in the mirror. He then goes out and immediately confronts a ghoul of some kind.

And that is when things become a little bit loopy.

Constantine meets a man named Tommy Willowtree.

It turns out that Tommy is a bit of a fan of Constantine’s.

They walk around and talk for a little bit. This part is admittedly a little wordy and I couldn’t figure out what Willowtree’s deal was.

Eventually, we see what the purpose of all of this was. It leads into a bigger storyline. The last page promises a lot of fun ahead of us. It actually makes things up a bit for the slow middle of the book.

I enjoyed the art most of all in this book. I have never seen the artwork of Matias Bergara before. He is excellent and one hell of a talent. He brings the quality of this book up a lot. This is a fairly decent first chapter of a new storyline.
