‘Infected: The Commissioner #1’ (review)

Written by Paul Jenkins
Art by Jack Herbert
Published by DC Comics

This is one of those Infected books where a hero is turned into a villain by the madness of The Batman Who Laughs.

This time around, the victim is Commissioner Gordon. While this didn’t sound too promising from the outset, it was actually pretty decent.

Mostly, that is because they had a strong writer on this. Paul Jenkins is a wonderful writer and he does very well with this material.

The beginning of this issue has Gordon with a touch of the madness.

He is finding that heroes make him laugh when they are hurt. He stands on the rooftop of police headquarters and has a discussion with Detective Conley. They talk for while about the state of the world.

Next up, we see Batgirl racing around the city. She comes to realize quickly that Gotham City is under siege. She sees military vehicles that are blocking her path. She then comes up against a group of villains and has to fight them.  The fight is completely brutal.

Batgirl does get the upper hand however! She then starts brutally beating a perpetrator.

Commissioner Gordon shows up and stops her. It is a beautifully done ending. That is about all that I can say about it as to not spoil it for anyone.

The writing here is spot on. I have never been that big of a Herbert fan but man, does he do a good job here. This is a pretty excellent one shot that tells a great little story and doesn’t overstay it’s welcome.

RATING: A-
