The Infected line of books have been pretty decent for the most part. Basically, The Joker Who Laughs infects some of the superheroes with madness and they become all sorts of evil. Some of these are more fun than others, but for the most part they have been enjoyable.
This issue in particular focuses on Donna Troy. The issue starts off with some of the Titans in the middle of madness, ready to face off against Donna.
It is a strong opening and made me want to see how we got to this point. Luckily, writer Zoe Quinn is smart enough to take us back three weeks and show us exactly that.
We get to see Donna Troy doing what she usually does as a hero. She is basically trying to solve a superhero problem. It is a pretty standard moment.
That is, until we see Donna’s dark side start to come out. The voices in her head are really starting to take over. She is struggling not to listen to them. But she also is starting to become powerless to stop them.
This is when the infection of the Batman Who Laughs takes her over completely. It is a dark moment. She then comes up against the Titans and they fight.
And sadly, that is all the story really gives us. There is a nice little spin at the end but it doesn’t give the reader a lot to grab onto. It feels like we just about get the set up and then it just ended.
That is the problem with these Infected books. They are very good with set up and then suddenly end. It always feels like a super quick read. I liked this, but I just wanted to see more. It is great to see Donna as the Deathbringer, but it was so brief that it was hard to really invest myself into the character or the story.
The art by Brent Peeples is great. The storytelling in this is tops. Again, I just wanted more meat to this. It was really cool but I wanted more room for the story to breathe. It felt like an appetizer to a meal. And that the meal never really came to the table.
