‘I Am Not Okay With This’ (review)

Written and Illustrated by Charles Forsman
Published by Fantagraphics Books

I read this awhile back and quite enjoyed it, and I reread it for this review. This was also recently a Netflix show that I did watch as well.  It was interesting to compare the show and this book as the graphic novel is indeed a lot darker.

This book follows a 15 year old girl named Sydney as she begins her freshman year of high school. She does everything a normal young woman in high school does. She is a bit of an outcast. She is in love with her best friend Dina.

But Sydney is anything but normal.

Sydney has these strange painful attacks that activate her telekinetic powers. And these telekinetic powers appear at some really inopportune times. They make Sydney kill people in her life.

The book deals with the ramifications of that.

Forsman does a great job on both the writing and art. His writing is terse and quick, and it provides for many emotional wallops. Similarly, the artwork is simple, yet it makes it completely accessible.

This is a book anyone can relate to.

Forsman also handles the themes of alienation and depression perfectly.

The ending is very different from the Netflix show. It is much, much darker. But it is a powerful statement and testament to what many people are experiencing daily. Worth a read.

RATING: A
