‘Heroes Return #1’ (review)

The thrill ride of the Heroes Reborn saga ends now.

Yes, in this final issue of the Heroes Reborn main title that, well, is not titled Heroes Reborn #8. Confoundingly, it’s Heroes Return #1.

Look, I get it. The Avengers are reassembled, and we know this means the alt-reality built by Mephisto will crumble and … hence … the heroes return, and the world will be restored.

But enough of the semantics. This issue rocks.

You want big fights and outlandish hero poses that Ed McGuinness has delivered for decades? You get ’em.

How about kickass dialog of your heroes being awesome? If you mean Black Panther saying, “Vibranium remembers when it was like to be a meteor,” then yes.

Maybe some more ridiculously amazing content in a big fight? Then check out when Suzanne Selby, aka Baby Starbrand, is a 5-year-old who screams at the man who killed her friend Rocket Raccoon, “Don’t need you to fight! Just need you to cry when I break you!”

Did you ever want to see the Starbrand and the Phoenix combine their awesome cosmic powers? Oh, it happens here.

How about screaming sound effects such as “HHRRRGGGH!!!” and “AAAARRRGGGH!”

And there’s more. So much more.

After the backmatter of Heroes Reborn #7 revealed President Coulson is in league with Mephisto to change reality, this comic just takes off. A little monologuing, but soon after it launches right into the action in Wakanda.

Thor is amazing. Captain America even more amazing.

I do miss some of the character work we had gotten over the previous issues, but I also love some big superhero fights.

The epilogue gives us some quieter moments that also turn out to be quite sad for some members of  the Squadron Supreme, and new mysteries for others.

But hang around for the final pages and what promises to be not the end to this little alt-reality attempting to bring hell on Earth.

What a ride! I miss it already.
