‘Gunland Volume 1’ (review)

Written and Illustrated by Captain Artiglio
Edited by Mike Kennedy
Published by Magnetic Press

I wasn’t too excited by the description of this book. It says the book was written and illustrated by somebody called Captain Artiglio who I have never heard of.

It is also published by Magnetic Press who I have heard of, but can’t remember reading any of their books.

So, it pleases me to say that this book is completely awesome and that I really quite enjoyed it.

This book opens with a really brutal scene that sets up the rest of the story.

We get to see a devious Doolin brother kill a homesteader in this scene.

It establishes the tone of the book right away. This scene stuck with me too, and it actually shook me a little.

Well done.

From there, we are introduced to the other two Doolin brothers. They are notorious outlaws. All three of them meet at a bar. One of them is killed by the barkeep. The other two, Dan and Dave, escape on their dinosaur steeds and escape to a safe place.

The two brothers then have to track down some loot that was stolen from them. One of their old partners betrayed them and they are out looking for the treasure. The rest of the book follows that plot line and it is a lot of fun to read.

This book is brimming with creativity. I have certainly never seen anything like it. The story is well paced and the artwork is perfect. Captain Artiglio does a great job on every aspect of this book. Definitely worth your time.

RATING: A –
