Last issue, Ollie was tasked with transporting Superman villain Parasite from one prison to another.
This issue heats up as current reigning Parasite, aka Joshua Allen, has escaped to the sewer system below the prison and Green Arrow must find and retrieve him.
The danger lies in that Parasite absorbs the powers of anyone he touches, so he must be stopped before he decimates Metropolis.
Technically, Green Arrow doesn’t have any super-powers which is why he was given the task in the first place. Green Arrow #42 concludes this two-issue arc, “Better Than”.
A quiver of special arrows later, Parasite is subdued, but not before showing his human side to the privileged Oliver Queen.
Joshua Adams was a bike messenger before the accident that made him feed on the life energy of his victims and Superman was able to contain him.
When he was imprisoned, the warden of the Super Maximum prison left Adams to rot, and unfortunately that is exactly who Arrow has to hand Parasite over to once he is sedated.
Ollie suffers badly by radiation burns on his hands by the end of the issue and for the handoff. The warden shows Ollie where Parasite lives and explains why it is a stark room with no contact to the outside, not even electricity because that would enhance his powers. In the end, Ollie pushes the warden to be more humane toward his inmates and is forced to walk away from the situation but I am sure Queen is going to be keeping an eye on the situation at the prison.
I really enjoyed this two-parter and look forward to some fun stories from Mairghread Scott over on Batgirl when she takes over that book! Batgirl and the Birds of Prey writers Julie Benson and Shawna Benson are up next as we settle in from fill-in issues to new regular creative teams at DC in August.
