Sometimes in the pop culture universe, things go right. Often though they go awry. Then there’s the downright atrocious.
This week’s Jammin’ On The One will feature the great (good), the not-so-great (bad) and the what-the-fuck (ugly).
THE GOOD
Rapper Joe Budden has assembled a sort of reunion for the great mixtape rappers of the late 90s and 200os. Fabolous, Lloyd Banks and Royce da 5’9″ join Joe on “Remember The Titans,” an epic posse cut from his latest mixtape Mood Muzik 4: A Turn 4 The Worst.
Posse cuts are always great because it involves rappers pushing each other to be better through natural competition.
While I’m a fan of the Fabolous, Royce and Joe, still not a fan of Lloyd Banks.
While he’s clearly the best G-Unit rapper. (No, that’s not saying much.) He’s a little too mumbly and raspy so it’s hard to understand him. But overall, this is a return to rappers trying to be actual artists and not just dudes who can rhyme cat with hat.
THE BAD
Baracka Flacka Flames is a viral Internet sensation, parodying Waka Flocka Flame’s “Hard In The Paint”….only if it was the 44th President of the United States doing the song instead of Waka. (Mr. Flame? Mr. Flocka Flame? What do you call him?)
Some people, including Waka and his mother-manager have found the video offensive.
Me?
I think it’s great satire. And to think Flame and Ma Flame are upset at its depiction of African-Americans is borderline hilarious. Apparently, she’s never listened to any of her son’s words that rhyme. (Calling them lyrics would be offensive to actual artists.)
THE UGLY
Seriously?
This seems like a joke…like Sir Smoke-a-Lot from Half Baked. But it’s not. This is a real rapper who people pay to rap and whose music is paid because they like the way he raps. I don’t know why Plies called this “Me Ho.” I think “Ho” would have covered all his bases on this one.
I have to go scrub my ears with bleach now.
