‘Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman #1’ (review)

Written by Marguerite Bennett
Art by Marguerite Sauvage
Published by DC Comics

This is a pretty decent book overall.

It is another different look at a familiar character. Kara Zor-El has been Supergirl for the longest time and in this title, she has grown up into the Superwoman role.

This is where the book starts off and I was interested to see where we were going from there.

The opening scene is “years from now.”

We see Kara on the Moon Colony. She is going about her business. Then, a rocket ship comes from the sky and almost hits Kara. From there, a strange looking child emerges from the rocket ship.

Who is the child and what does this all mean?

Things get even stranger quickly. This child apparently can shape shift and causes a bunch of anxiety. It all seems pretty innocent and goofy at first.

The child seems very friendly and is a bit of an innocent. But then, something unexpected happens that turns this story around.

It seems like there is more to this child than meets the eye.

We see some of her plans and who she is. That is when Kara has to make a decision. It leads into one hell of a last page.

That page is one hell of a splash page as well.

That page, as well as all of the art, is by Marguerite Sauvage and she does an outstanding job here. The art really propels this story. The script is a little basic to be honest, but the art certainly brings it up. All in all, this is a decent first issue with some genuine excitement.

RATING: B+
