Art by Ben Oliver

The Future State line of books keeps on going with this book. It is a cool new look at the usual Batman team ups with Superman. I love what the creative team did with this. It is inventive and fun and full of adventure. I enjoyed this book very much and it left me energized.
This issue starts off in Gotham City at “The Beginning of the Occupation.”
I had no idea what that meant at the time. But I quickly found out.
The Magistrate is taking over Gotham City and Batman desperately trying to stop them.
But things go to hell pretty quickly.
Batman tries to call in Superman for help.
Superman gets there but he finds a city under siege. He does his best to help Batman out but the city is pretty out of control.
The issue is basically one big crazy battle that leads to one hell of a last page that I didn’t see coming.
This is a must have issue for anyone following the Future State titles.
It explains a lot of background to how the DC Universe ended up here. The details and the thought behind it all make it work. I was dubious about it all but I am impressed.
Even more impressive to me was the fact that Gene Luen Yang wrote the book. There is nothing on his resume that suggests that he can write in this style and he does a great job. Ben Oliver does an excellent job on the art as well.
I enjoyed this title a lot and it is definitely one of the better Future State titles.
