FOG! Reviews ABC’s HAPPY ENDINGS

Six twenty-something friends who apparently don’t work, hanging out all of the time while living in a major metropolitan city.

Sound familiar?

What about a series pilot that begins with a runaway bride?

I’m out of hints.

Now add a homosexual character and an interracial relationship and substitute drinking coffee for booze and you’ve pretty much got ABC’s newest series, Happy Endings the bastard child of Friends and Courtney Cox’s Cougar Town, which premieres tomorrow at 9:30 PM EST following Modern Family.

The difference is that Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) disappears during the ceremony, and comes back to jilted ex Dave (Zachary Knighton), who is already bedding a high schooler (What was that line from that other show?  Oh, right, “We were on a break”).  The main difference is that Alex and Dave make amends for the good of their social circle which includes Alex’s sister and brother-in-law Jane and Brad (Eliza Coupe and Damon Wayans Jr.), relationship challenged, boy-crazy friend Penny (Casey Wilson) and finally, homosexual Max (Adam Pally) whose friendship with Brad is pretty much a cut and paste of J.D. and Turk’s bromance from Scrubs.

Happy Endings isn’t particularly bad.  It’s just not much of anything.  Having seen the first four episodes, the characters do grow on you a bit, but the entire series set up of the abandoned marriage and possible choosing sides is forgotten by the end of the first episodes closing credits.  Despite attempts to be something new, it’s pretty much just a standard sitcom, but unfortunately, not particularly funny.

Happy Endings will premiere Wednesday April 13 at 9:30 pm after Modern Family and another new episode will air at 10:00 pm in the series regular time slot.
