At this weekend’s Rhode Island Comic Con, I moderated a panel with Flash Gordon, Savior of the Universe himself, Mr. Sam J. Jones.
The affable star, who has seen a career resurgence with his appearance in last year’s Ted, discussed the iconic film and revealed that he has discussed the new film with producer Neal H. Moritz and that plans are underway for Jones to reprise his role (and presumably the original cast which included Melody Anderson, Topol, Brian Blessed, Ornella Muti, Max von Sydow and Timothy Dalton).
Way back in 2010, director Breck Eisner revealed that this film was a new origin story and would have no connection to the 1980 version including the music by Queen.
“It’s a movie that is in no way a remake or a re-imagining or a reboot of the ’80s version or the serial version. No Queen [music]. It is not camp in any way. We’re going back to the original Alex Raymond [comic strip] scripts and imagining if he were living today, what would those strips be like?”
According to Jones, Stephen E. de Souza is the current writer attached to the project. Despite the conflicting information, there might be a shred of possibility that Jones’ news is accurate. The film found a new audience and Jones’ profile was certainly elevated with the release of Ted.
Keep in mind, I’m 5’11” which makes Sam bit of a behemoth! |
Would what you want to see? A sequel or a reboot?
