Art by Jeremy Lambert
Published by DC Comics
This book is exactly how I like my Doom Patrol stories to be: Weird, wacky and funny. The creative team really has struck quite a fine balance here and it shows.
Not since Grant Morrison was on the book, has a creative team been this strong; Gerard Way and his collaborators really know what they are doing.
The opening scene is Cliff waking up to find himself in a new robot body. He’s getting adjusted to it. It’s a heavy scene of dialogue that works nonetheless. Things are very strange.
Then, we pass by Larry. And Larry is giving birth to a series of eggs.
Wait, what?
The creative team do not hold back on the bizarre weirdness. It’s a good thing. I have to be honest. I’m not always sure where I was geographically in the story while reading this book. But I was always entranced by what was happening. The book works best if you just surrender to it and that’s what I ended up doing. I’m thankful that I did.
Eventually, the team become involved in the divorce proceedings of two cosmic entities. It’s weird and wonderful and strangely emotional. By the end of the book, we are introduced to a new aspect of Larry. And god only knows where we will end up from this as a result. I just know that I will be reading.
The story itself is the definition of “quirky.” It never takes itself too seriously and that’s a good thing. The art by Lambert is tops. He’s has a great talent for comic art that I just love. I wish that he would do more work. This is a top level book by a top level creative team. I certainly can’t wait for however much more that they give us. It’s pretty great.
