So, the cover of this book is a lie.
It says that the usual team of Gerard Way and Jeremy Lambert have written the book with art by Nick Pitarra.
They have not. But that is okay!
Becky Cloonan both writes and draws this issue!
And Becky Cloonan is great!
So I was pretty happy from the get go.
The opening sequence is a young girl in her bedroom reading Doom Patrol comics. Her mother calls for her from outside her room and tells her that she is going to be late. The girl uses the comic to try to figure out how her day is going to go, almost like a magic eight ball of fate.
We don’t get a name for the girl. But she is having a hard time. She wonders If things are going to get any better for her. That is when the Doom Patrol comic opens up a portal that she just falls through. She meets a girl named Dorothy there and that is when things really get strange.
The girl and Dorothy walk through the desert. They eventually end up in a place called Dannyland. The nameless girl finds Robotman and solicits his help. Cliff doesn’t seem to want to help until he sees that Dorothy is there.
It turns out that Dorothy is a Scissorman! The Scissorman attacks Cliff! An all out fight erupts! The nameless girl helps Cliff! Another portal opens up! And then she sadly wakes up in her bed back home.
The ending is just plain strange and wonderful. Cloonan just brings it home. She is an excellent artist and a fantastic writer. It is simply a joy to read this issue. It is a little slight, but that’s okay. I enjoyed it from start to finish.
