Recently, both Steve Niles and Eric Powell both presented mission statements promoting creator owned comics.
There is no better example of that then Com.X‘s upcoming graphic novel Seeds by Ross Mackintosh.
This book is the kind of title that could very well get the critical attention that it deserves, but won’t get the support from an average comic book store, which is why I urge you to preorder it.
In July 2009, Ross Mackintosh learned that his father had contracted cancer. Beginning with the diagnosis, then taking us through the journey of his father’s decline and eventual passing, SEEDS is a touching tribute and powerful, autobiographical account of one man’s experience, combining humour, sadness, philosophy and honesty.
Some of you might know that my father has been ill with Alzheimer’s and is in the end stages and when Com.X publisher Benjamin Shahrabani sent me an advance copy, I found the book so moving that I was quoted for the back.
Ross Mackintosh has done an amazing job chronicling the intellectually logical and emotionally illogical experience of watching a parent become terminally ill. Seeds is a comfort for anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one and a testament to what makes the comics medium so uniquely special. A must read.
