‘Detention #2’ GN (review)

Written and Illustrated by Tim Hensley
Published by Fantagraphics

I’m not entirely sure what I just read in Detention # 2, but I didn’t much care for it.

It seems to have been a spoof of the old Classics Illustrated comics, an adaptation of a 129-year-old minor “classic” by Stephen Crane (Maggie, A Girl of the Streets), acted out here by cast members from Dennis the Menace, Snuffy Smith, and the Family Circus, as well as some random Milt Gross and Don Martin characters and the Yellow Kid.

It’s possible it may have been funnier if I had been more familiar with the source material it’s adapting/parodying but I can’t see how.

As it is, I quite liked the cartooning style, apparently by one Tim Hensley (hard to tell as the credits try and fail to be amusing, too), but the book overall seemed to me a supremely unfunny slog.

If it were shorter and had more nudity, I would have sworn this was a 1980s National Lampoon strip, rather than a Fantagraphics book—and apparently the second in a series.

I still don’t think I would have cared for it, I’m afraid.
