‘Deathstroke #44’ (review)

Written by Christopher Priest
Illustrated by Fernando Pasarin
Published by DC Comics

Man, Christopher Priest can sure write a story. This issue is so damn compelling that I actually read it twice.

Deathstroke has been killed in the last storyline and this issue deals with the fallout. It’s incredibly well done and I couldn’t believe what was happening. It’s awesome.

Deathstroke’s funeral is what opens the issue. There are some unexpected guests who attend the burial. We see Doctor Light giving a eulogy for Slade. This angle on a villain’s death is something we don’t get to see a lot of.

Sure, we have all seen heroes getting buried, but we never really get to experience it from the villains perspective.

So that, in of itself, was pretty cool.

Then, what we see after all of that is pretty interesting as well.

One by one, a bunch of the villains give a eulogy for Slade. It’s something really incredible. One by one, they go up to the dais and they reflect on Slade and his Deathstroke persona. Some of it is very funny. All of it is rather macabre for sure, but it’s also incredibly entertaining.

We then get to see a scene with the Teen Titans. Robin is very upset at what he has done by killing Slade. It’s very well handled by Priest who makes the scene feel real and honest. Red Arrow shows up and then tells Damian how he has done the right thing. This leads to a fight between the two that is highly emotionally charged, especially when we see how Slade’s son, Jericho, has joined in the mix.

Deathstroke is eventually laid to rest. It is made to look like he is really dead. I was thinking that maybe it was a hoax. Not all all. Priest went there and stays there which is truly commendable.

Now it’s very likely that Slade Wilson will come back. But the next issue promises a new Deathstroke. Who will it be? I have no idea. I just know it’ll be extremely intriguing from here on. And I, for one, can’t wait. Bring it on.

RATING: A-
