‘Death or Glory Issues #1 & #2’ (review)

Written by Rick Remender
Illustrated by Bengal
Published by Image Comics

Man, Rick Remender is something else. He just has a way to create worlds which comic readers have not seen before. From Deadly Class to Fear Agent, Remender has created some amazing work. That’s what makes this book such a sad disappointment thus far.

This feels a bit like the The Fast and The Furious film series,  but with slightly better characters.

But only slightly.

The opening scene has a guy walking into a fast food restaurant. He orders 123 cheeseburgers. Then, there is a bit a fight and some killing. Who is this man? What does this teaser mean? This is never really explained fully as of yet. It’s a bit frustrating to be honest.

After that, we are introduced to Glory. In a great wordless sequence drawn by Bengal, we see how paranoid Glory is. And with good reason. We slowly learn about the dangers in the world of Remender’s new creation.

Glory is a woman who grew up off the grid. She is decently developed by Remender and could be a great character to build a comic book series around. It’s just not there yet.

Her father needs surgery. And so Glory set out cross country to do four different heists. The stakes are there!

But it’s not any fun. And maybe it can be one day. A heist comic should have excitement and great characters. Sadly, the excitement isn’t there yet and the other characters in the book are strangely flat.

The second issue has the same problem as the first. We spend a lot of time in this issue on the character of Pablo. He’s just not as interesting as Glory. We barely got to know her and now we are introduced to a character who is fairly bland.
The only other character who is interesting is Korean Joe. He’s a vicious character and he might make a great villain for that book. We shall see.

The brightest part of this whole endeavor thus far is the art of Bengal. It’s wonderful and fluid and moves beautifully.

Now let’s hope Remender can pull it together and get this book on track. It feels like it eventually could turn into something great. It’s just not there yet.

RATING: B-
