Cor’ Chief! The Greatest Secret Agent in the World and The World’s Worst Assistant ARE BACK!

From a Typical Baker St. pillar box comes the story of the world’s greatest secret agent and his assistant, Penfold…

I was both very excited and super worried about this show.

However, my fears were quelled with the opening theme song.

The world may have changed but our intrepid rodent dangereuses has not.

That’s right, Danger Mouse has returned to the airwaves thanks to Netflix and CBBC.

I LOVE Danger Mouse.

I love Penfold, his bumbling hamster sidekick.

I love Colonel K, DM’s boss.

I love villains Baron Silas von Greenback, Stiletto and Nero.

The New Danger Mouse is spot on and is a perfect reintroduction to the original series that valiantly carries the torch from the original 80’s & 90’s animated series to the present day.

The animation is modernized from the original but it is a natural evolution from the look and style of the animated classic spy series. It looks great and I love that all the wackiness and pun ridden humor is kept fully intact.

This show is so good.

Updating Danger Mouse from original creators Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall’s early 80’s series was the brain child of director Robert Cullen and writer Ben Ward. They have done an amazing job at keeping the silly, kinetic story telling and dynamic action alive this new series. Sleek and funny, they do not disappoint.

I was pleasantly surprised that they kept to the same basic formula that worked so well in the original series and yet they have updated the way they present the formula for a new generation. The key to my heart is the humor and ridiculousness that Danger Mouse did well. The new series captures that perfectly.

New voice actors, Alexander Armstrong and Kevin Eldon are wonderful heirs apparent to David Jason and Terry Scott in the lead roles of DM and Penfold, respectively. Both seem to approach the roles with love and an affection to their predecessors such that any slight differences in their voices are nullified by their grasp of the inflection and essence of what was done before them. The addition of British comedian and actor Stephen Fry as Colonel K is inspired. He is a British national treasure. The rest of the voice talent is great and it is nice that they aren’t trying to impersonate their predecessors instead they pay homage to them. Also, it is nice to hear Stiletto’s Italian accent again (It was changed to Cockney in the American version as to not offend the Italian-Americans in the US). Previously, I had only ever heard the original Italian accent on crappy DVD bootlegs I had bought at some terrible conventions years ago.

This new Netflix series keeps to the original British episode length of 10-11 minutes. The Nickelodeon series packed three episodes together to make a 30 minute series for American audiences. The pilot, however is 23 minutes to accommodate the backstory and then the continuing plot.

I was only given the first three episodes to review, however if these are any reflection to the rest of the 26 episode series, this show is going to be amazing.

As it premieres today on Netflix, I know what I will be binge watching over the weekend.
