There’s no doubt that the boldest and most personal fashion statement anyone can make is in one’s selection of t-shirt. Personally, I love them. It’s an opportunity to show the world what pop culture I care about, a wonderful flashback to the past and a fantastic way to initiate any nerd discussion.
For this installment of Cool Shirts, I took a look at some of the shirts from 80sTees, which was the first 80s memorabilia online store and has now become a prime destination for pop culture tribes everywhere to come together and share their geekery!
80sTees sells more than shirts. Among their wares are socks, costumes, ugly Christmas sweaters, hoodies and more.
These are a few of my recent favorites.
“Presenting the further adventures of everybody’s favorite hero. A man who is faster than lightning, stronger than steel, smarter than a speeding bullet. It’s… SUPERGROVER!”
And in the words of Grover himself, “And I am cute, too!”
That’s right, Sesame Street‘s number one crimefighter arrives on this powder blue 100% cotton t-shirt that reminds everyone just how street you are.
Granted, Grover’s not your average tough guy alpha male, but rather a lovable blue, furry monster that wants to be friends with everyone.
And that’s a lesson that’s best learned on Sesame Street and carried with you (or at least worn) well into adulthood.
Batman The Animated Series T-Shirt
Perhaps the greatest animated series ever made, this shirt pays tribute to the art-deco reimagining by featuring the iconic Dark Knight as depicted by Bruce Timm.
Merging all of the various interpretations of the Caped Crusader into the show, Batman: The Animated Series featured well written scripts, incredible art design and some of the best voice talents in the medium, not to mention pop culture’s greatest rogue’s gallery including The Joker, Two-Face, The Riddler, Catwoman, The Penguin, and more.
Let the world know where you stand with this shirt….You are vengeance, you are the night, you are Batman! And you’re 100% cotton!
El Diablo Cazador De Hombres, or The Demon Hunter Of Men, or you know, The Predator.
For Dutch, Dillon, Mac, Eliot, Cooper, Poncho, Sole and Hawkins, he’s nothing but trouble. Perhaps the most dangerous extraterrestrial to spend time on Earth, The Predator found itself spending an awful lot of time in
the jungle. Dutch and his team are there to rescue a hostage held hostage by insurgents in Val Verde, but it doesn’t take long for them to discover three skinned corpses hanging from trees or the very real threat that they are being hunted one by one by an invisible creature using thermal imaging.
So next time you find yourself in unfamiliar, albeit Spanish speaking location, best to confirm that the locals have no idea who or what El Diablo Cazador De Hombres is.
And also, don’t drink the water.
His name might not carry the same weight outside of Chicago, but in The Windy City’s most fashionable restaurant’s Abe Froman’s name carries an awful lot of weight.
Chicago historians know that Adolph Luetgert ran the successful A.L. Luetgert Sausage & Packing Company and was considered the “sausage king” of Chicago until being accused of murdering his wife and being sentenced to life in prison on February 9, 1898. Her body was falsely rumored to be an ingredient in Luetgert’s sausage. The end of his reign, however, had arrived.
Froman, was spotted at Chez Quis the mid 1980s and looked nothing like his caricature. Rarely photographed, in person he was much younger than expected and was seen wearing a white t-shirt, leopard sweater vest, grey pants, white bucks and a taupe and grey leather jacket.
1983 Star Wars Convention Shirt
So, it’s 1983 and you just saw Return of The Jedi and it was awesome. And you read in Bantha Tracks that there was a convention where you could meet actual cast members, buy merchandise and get an exclusive t-shirt available only at the show!
Whether this convention actually happened or not is a matter of debate, but chances are if it had, you’d probably found yourself in a Holiday Inn ballroom with special guests like Mon Mothma, Admiral Piett, Max Rebo and the guy who played the Rancor Keeper.
But, don’t let the dream die there. As the shirt does exist, you can add it to your collection, claim that you were there, and got to hang out with Mark Hamill, arm wrestled Peter Mayhew and watched a bunch of drunk Ewoks slam dance.
Who’s to know?
