After last issue’s action-packed twists, our story slows down considerably here.
We take stock of the fallout after Frontier revealed to Crisis Command that the Earth they’re trying to save – the last one, Earth-Z — is the one where evil wins.
What’s more, they also discover the leader of the Extinction Society is Frontier’s own Earth-Z doppelganger.
So, what now?
The team has broken up, and we spend time with each of them to see what they’ve been up to since that fight, in a world where empathy itself is dead.
The Congressional act that would split apart the United States of America into an alliance of 52 independent states is moving closer to ratification; an EMT in Naples, Italy, drags on a cigarette while refusing to answer an emergency call because it’s still seven minutes before his shift, and, as he says, the bodies will still be there.
We find out, however, that not all of Crisis Command went their separate ways.
Originator and Prizefighter work a mission together, and Sawbones and Seer undergo an eye-opening encounter as well. But ain’t nobody trying to hear out Frontier after her lies came out.
Overall, this issue was a little too placeholder-y for my tastes.
But it was good to slow down and get some more work on these characters nonetheless.
Seer takes up some more quality time with the older lesbian couple from previous issues, and they share an affecting conversation about the potentially world-changing things kept off the table by secrets, even necessary ones.
But don’t think it’s all heart-to-hearts and apologetic text messages from Frontier in this issue. We also get some fun comic book stuff, too. Killer software, a time prison that holds inmates a day in the past, and our villain in a lab surrounded by disembodied hearts in tubes.
While it may not all come together, the lasting effect remains the same:
No more messin’ about! Let’s get on with the action!
