Long rumored villain, The Riddler, will not be the nemesis in director Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.
In an interview with Hero Complex, Nolan stated ““We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones.”
So, the question is, who exactly?
Definitely returning:
Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne
Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth
Gary Oldman as Commissioner James Gordon
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox
Possibly returning:
Cillian Murphy as Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow
Nestor Carbonell as Mayor Anthony Garcia
Monique Gabriela Curnen as Det. Anna Ramirez
Anthony Michael Hall as Mike Engel
Eric Roberts as Salvatore Maroni
Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-Face (apparently dead, but could have just been unconscious)
New possibilities (crossed out means that they have already been eliminated by Nolan himself)
The Riddler
Mr. Freeze
Black Mask: A possiblity, with little recognition. Essentially a gangster in a mask, which works with the Nolanverse.
Hush: A relatively new character, with ties to Bruce’s childhood. Might work better in film than it ever did in the comic. Is this the Tom Hardy character?
Catwoman: The femme fatale of the Batverse. Pretty much expected at this point.
Clayface: Too supernatural in concept.
Man Bat: Doesn’t work in the established reality.
Deadshot: Super-assassin. Works.
Harley Quinn: Former therapist in love with the Joker. Could this character take over for the deceased Heath Ledger?
Hugo Strange: Psychiatrist obsessed with Batman/Wayne. Could definitely work.
Killer Croc: Some interpretations have him as a circus freak; others as mob boss or muscle. Unlikely, but could maybe be reworked.
Mad Hatter: Mind controlling hats? Nope.
The Penguin: Recent incarnations of the character have him as a mob boss. Yes.
Poison Ivy: Too supernatural in concept. Not really a good fit for the Nolan Batman.
Red Hood: In the comics, the original criminal identity of the Joker, later the identity of assassin Jason Todd, the second and believed to be deceased Robin. The assassin angle would work in some capacity, but it’s too similar to Deadshot without the Joker/Jason Todd backstory.
The Ventriloquist: Too comedic for the current interpretation.
And what about?
Robin: I’m a big fan of the character and depending on how Nolan envisions the journey of Bruce Wayne, this could work.
Batgirl: Doesn’t have to be Gordon’s daughter. Possibly a vigilante inspired by Batman?
