Blood Moon is a film with a simple premise that works quite well.
Set in 1887 Colorado, the film concerns a stagecoach full of travelers and a pair of bank robbing brothers who come head to head at a remote supply stop and become the prey of a skinwalker. All of this while a sheriff and a Native American tracker roam the woods searching for the bank robbers and the tracker warns the sheriff about the skinwalkers, the Native American folklore equivalent to the werewolf.
Now to say that Blood Moon is simply a Native American werewolf western is certainly correct, but don’t dismiss this indie film as a cheap monster movie.
The story is fairly basic and many of the characters are stock, but director Jeremy Wooding certainly put his budget where it counted and that is a practical effects creature, along with a decent looking shooting location and sets. I’m not sure what this films budget was but it looks like they put it all on screen with fun effects, atmospheric lighting, and quality cinematography.
Overall the story is enjoyable and the acting is pitch perfect for this type of film. I would definitely recommend checking Blood Moon out as its quality defied all of my expectations of a low budget period monster film.
Blood Moon is a fun monster throwback and a great genre mash-up, and is now available on DVD and all VOD platforms.
