‘Beta Ray Bill #5’ (review)

Written and Illustrated by Daniel Warren Johnson
Published by Marvel Comics

This series has been completely awesome.

Daniel Warren Johnson does one hell of a job in both writing and drawing it.

This has been one of the best Marvel comic books in years. It is a real shame that this is the last issue.

The last few issues have all been leading up to this finale.

Beta Ray Bill has been through hell and back getting to this moment and it is finally here. He finally comes face to face with the deadly Surtur to have their final battle.

And what a battle it is! Johnson doesn’t hold back in giving us one of the most glorious moments in the character’s history. Bill is facing off against the fire god who destroyed his entire planet. That makes the issue emotionally charged as well and Johnson delivers.

It also leads to one hell of an ending. Bill is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice. By the end, he does lose a part of himself. It is a hell of an ending and Johnson really does deliver on all fronts.

I loved every second of it.

This is a pretty complete story. Johnston is the real deal and nails this story perfectly. He is very talented. I can’t wait to see what he creates next. I will certainly be there for it.

RATING: A
