Best Movies: Thor: The Dark World and Man of Steel; we’re truly living in a great age for comic book movies and while each has its own flaws, I can’t deny that I had fun watching them, especially since Superman wasn’t reduced to a creepy stalker deadbeat dad this time around.
Best TV Shows: Naturally, I’m loving Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I’ve also been pleasantly surprised with Sleepy Hollow and Almost Human, two shows that have been consistently solid.
Best Books (fiction): I finally got around to reading Crime and Punishment over a snowy three day weekend and it definitely lived up to the hype. It’s just a shame it’s not really taught in many US schools here the way some other novels are.
Best Books (non-fiction): The Lost City of Z totally blew me away, telling the tale of a lost explorer, subsequent recovery attempts, and enough information to convince that the Amazon was never meant to be lived in as it’s basically nature’s kill box, a death trap the likes of which a Bond villain could only dream.
Best Albums: Dream Theater’s newest release may have had an uninspired name (just Dream Theater) and the songs were not as epic as past installments, but the old dogs learn some new tricks and keep it as fresh and exciting as ever, at least in the 20 plus years I’ve been listening to them.
Best Comic Books / Graphic Novels: Man, too many to even list, a problem when you get upwards of 90 books a month. Snyder’s Batman and The Wake were a delight, as was, surprisingly, Bendis’ All-New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men books. The Unwritten also continued to be a page turner, from the conclusion to the first volume to the Ship That Sank Twice original GN.
Best Blu-ray/DVD Release: The Blu-ray release of Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox was full of good stuff, and I loved all the goodies on the extended version of The Wolverine as well.
Thing that you were most excited about in 2013?: At the time of this survey, I’m on imminent arrival mode of my first son, Lex Baserap. Really, it doesn’t get more exciting than that.
Thing that disappointed you most in 2013?: Having to choose between being employed and dealing with an overbearing and incompetent boss and sticking up for what was right and leaving to face uncertainty; I chose the latter and while it sucked, it was the best call. Screw bullies and conformity.
Thing that you’re most looking forward to in 2014?: Starting a new chapter with my son as an addition to the family and whatever new employment awaits me on the horizon. And, of course, comic books. Lots and lots of comic books.
