‘Batman: Three Jokers #1’ (review)

Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Jason Fabok
Published by DC Comics

I have been waiting for this book for a really long time.

The creation of this book has been forming since Johns and Fabok did the “Darkseid War” story years back in Justice League. A lot of questions were asked at that time.

Now, a lot of the answers to those questions are coming to light. Johns and Gary Frank did their Watchmen tribute in Doomsday Clock. This time, Johns and Fabok are taking their cues from The Killing Joke.

There is something really great about this book right from the outset.

This book doesn’t feature “alternate dimension Jokers” or anything like that.

This is a book grounded in reality.

At first, we get to see Bruce in the Batcave getting stitched up. Then they show the classic origin story.

We then get to see the Joker driving a Ace Chemicals truck. The truck seems to be leaking some of the Joker’s toxin. It is very strange but very interesting.

Batman and Robin are seen driving to the Gotham Aquarium. They stop, and then Batman gets out and meets up with the Red Hood and Batgirl. We then get to see these three protagonists walking into the Aquarium.

They poke their heads around. That is when we see that the fish are infected with the Joker’s terrible toxin, complete with smiles (harkening back to the Englehart/Rogers run).

A whole bunch of craziness erupts. Batman is on the case of who these three Jokers actually are. To say too much is to give away some of the revelations that lie within this comic. That being said it it full of plenty of great moments

Geoff Johns proved himself to me with Doomsday Clock as a writer. When he takes his time on a script, it comes out great. This certainly did. Artist Jason Fabok does an awesome job on the art too.

This is a great book and a superb release. It may have taken a while for to get here, but it was certainly worth the wait.

RATING: A+
