‘Batman: Prelude to the Wedding: Robin vs Ra’s Al Ghul #1’ (review)

Written by Tim Seeley
Illustrated by Brad Walker,
Andrew Hennessy, Mick Gray

Published by DC Comics

Batman is getting married to Catwoman.

They are on their way! And that means, we are getting a lot of content.

This is the first out of the gate and it isn’t half bad. The writing is a little soft but it makes up for it with dynamic artwork and exciting pacing from Walker.

This opening scene is very amusing. Damian is trying on clothes for his father’s wedding. He is with Selina Kyle and the two talk. It’s a cute little scene and something that we haven’t seen before.

They have a conversation and they establish some new boundaries and what their relationship will be.

From there, Damian goes out for a night on the town doing some crime fighting. He runs across a new villain named Aion who seems spectacularly cheesy. There’s more to him than we see at first and the reveal is actually lame.

It turns out Ra’s Al Ghul is the villain of the issue (hey, don’t blame me for the spoiler…look at the name of the book!).

The meeting between Damian and Ra’s is interesting but is so brief you start to wonder what the point is. I wish Seeley made this the focal point of the book. Instead, we are left with almost a series of vignettes that don’t mean much. Even the surprise ending is forced a bit.

The best part of the book is the artwork by Walker. His output recently has been more frequent. That’s great, he’s a different artist and he’s awesome. I hope he does more work for DC.

Overall, this isn’t bad, just rather slight. Maybe the other upcoming issues will have more depth.

RATING: B
