‘Archie Horror Presents Chilling Adventures in Sorcery’ (review)

Written and Illustrated by Various
Cover by Francesco Francavilla
Published by Archie Comics

This is another black and white collection from Archie, clearly designed to cash in on the company’s success in recent years with darker books like Afterlife with Archie.

Sabrina is the only Archie character who appears though, as these stories are actually reprints from for decades back when the company experimented very briefly with straight horror comics for the first time.

Initially they were hosted by Sabrina and drawn in traditional Archie style which proved to be a pretty odd match.

Soon enough, veteran illustrator Gray Morrow was brought in as editor/writer/artist.

Gray himself added on writers Marvin Channing and Larry Hama, artist Vicente Alcazar, the legendary Alex Toth, the slick Dick Giordano, and others, to create some truly creepy stories that apparently didn’t sell.

Not enough to last long, anyway, but to anyone who read them, they were memorable.

It’s good to see them again but one of Gray’s strong suits was his use of color, particularly on covers, and the reader is entirely cheated out of that here.

With that in mind…

Booksteve still recommends.
