American Vampire was one of my favorite Vertigo comics when it was coming out on a regular basis.
There was something really cool about following a certain set of characters throughout various time period. It also would introduce new characters all throughout the series.
I was excited to hear about a new series coming down the pile and I was even more excited to read it!
I wasn’t disappointed in the least.
This is a strong first issue. We start off this book with seeing everyone’s favorite rascal Skinner Sweet pretty frustrated. But who can blame him? He has tried to regain his immortality for a really long time, yet it just keeps eluding him. Things aren’t looking too well.
Skinner is in a bad state of things when he first appears here.
We see him at this motorcycle rally in the middle of the desert. He is trying to end his pain. Right when he thinks his life cannot get any worse, Pearl Jones shows up. Pearl’s life has been inexplicably linked to Skinner’s and he is not too happy to see her.
Apparently, the Gray Trader is up to no good.
He is burrowing through the ground for a very specific purpose. He is trying to unleash hell on earth for America’s bicentennial!
Pearl enlists Skinner’s help for one last mission! She has also brought along some help of her own, someone longtime readers will instantly recognize.
The whole issue is entirely fun.
Series writer Scott Snyder does a great job here as usual. It is like no time has passed.
The art is pretty great as well. Artist Rafael Albuquerque is at the top of his game.
The quality of this comic is amazing. I can’t wait to see what the creative team has in store for us. Great stuff.
