‘American Ronin #1’ (review)

Written by Peter Milligan
Art by ACO
Published by AWA Studios

There are so many comic book companies out there that it is hard to make a new dent in the industry. However, that is what AWA Studios is currently doing.

This new title has top talent on it and the debut issue is pretty damn good. You can’t ask for more than that.

The very first page of this issue throws a lot of information at the reader. But it is all explained well throughout the issue.

Basically, an event happened that changed the world. It has forced corporations to go into a private and silent war against each other.

These corporations have been training these highly skilled operatives to go to war for them.

These operatives have been trained since they were children to fight for the corporate flag. This is the story of one such operative.

We get to meet this character or this “ronin.”

A lot of information again is thrown at us, but it is easily digestible. We get to see the ronin trying to break free from from his employer’s reach, in both mentally and physically ways.

Writer Peter Milligan writes a smart script that never gets too bogged down in technical speak. It is smart but accessible. ACO does a great job with the art here, reminding me of Dave Gibbons for some reason.

This is a well done first issue overall!

RATING: A-
